Take a look at St. Clair Colleges website. In relation to visuals, what would you propose to St. Clair College to improve/enhance this new website to effectively market to potential incoming local domestic students. Please provide three (3) recommendations and justify your answer with detailed reasoning. (9 Marks)

St. Clair should prioritize enhancing visuals on their website as it is highly cluttered and makes for an uninviting user experience. Using proper imagery and including more students on the home page would be a good start. It would cater to the diverse needs of the incoming local domestic students. With the website’s layout, St. Clair also has a section that locks the user into scrolling left or right, which feels wrong as users aren’t accustomed to this.

This section should be changed to accommodate the local domestic students and their parents. One option St. Clair could do is show scholarships and bursaries on this and make it static so new students can easily access them without going through a bunch of pages to get there.

To help incoming local domestic students explore their academic interests and career options, St. Clair College can visually represent their programs and career pathways on its website. This would almost be like an open house but online and just for the programs; instead of going on campus, the potential students could see the overview of their program and past student success stories. It would help them see if the program is right for them and take out the guesswork. A local student could see a timeline of sorts of typical career pathways in a visualized form. Visualizing this pathway and programs will make it easier for students to understand the education journey they would need to take and help align their future goals with their careers. Additionally, as stated earlier, St. Clair College can incorporate testimonials and past success stories from alumni who have pursued similar academic paths and provide incoming students with real-world insights and inspiration.

St. Clair College can integrate social media feeds and user-generated content into the homepage of its website to create a dynamic and engaging UX for potential incoming local domestic students. St. Clair can make their site more geared towards incoming students by featuring visually appealing posts and helpful information from the college’s official social media channels. Using the user-generated content from faculty and alumni, the website can also provide authentic glimpses into campus life, events that are happening, and student accomplishments all in real-time; this will also save St. Clair time and money as it will be automated and won’t need to be check unless doing quality control. This interactive approach showcases a more vibrant side to St. Clair and encourages prospective students to connect with the college and the surrounding community. Using user-generated content also fosters a sense of belonging and inclusivity, which the page is lacking.

Assignment 4 Question 2 https://blog.fromtherackwindsor.com/assignment-4-question-2/ Tue, 02 Apr 2024 05:13:11 +0000 https://blog.fromtherackwindsor.com/?p=1405 This is a multi-part question. Please create a visual post for your blog on a topic specific to your business and answer the questions below. This involves critical thinking. What is important to your business and visitors? The image must be the focal point of the post telling the story or conveying a point. You may include multiple images. The goal is to visually convey a message with minimal text. Please pay attention to what was discussed in class. Ensure that you include a link to the blog post in your answer. Do not forget that this needs to be included in your hardcopy. I am marking what you hand in with your hardcopy but also need to see the digital version on your blog. If it is not online for me to view (in addition to the hardcopy), I cannot mark this question. (4 Marks)

While searching through our local Goodwill we came across this $1000-dollar Nascar Tee and many more high-quality vintage pieces. Want to see this insane find closer? Click on the button and it’ll take you right to our store page!

Through this visual focused post, we are targeting the quality and authenticity of our vintage, and we are using emotional and story telling elements to get our post across to the users.

Visitors who click on the post seek unique, high-quality vintage they can’t get elsewhere. Therefore, it’s of the highest importance that we show our consumers that we source everything authentically, aren’t buying fast fashion, and stay as sustainable as possible. In doing this, we are showing consumers that we are trusted and that we can maintain customer satisfaction.

Our target audience would find this post very emotional, as anyone who has thrifted before has felt the rush when you find unique pieces. We are targeting this within the image and making it as easily digestible as possible so the consumer has no problem connecting with the blog post. The image also tells a story, as the consumer can immediately understand what the post will be about. We also have a CTA in the blog post to get consumers back to our site. It gives a surprise element as the consumer wants to know how much we listed the shirt we found on our site.

We chose these images based on their visual impact. The first image conveys excitement, surprise, and the thrill of uncovering hidden gems at the thrift store. It draws the reader’s attention and piques their curiosity. This image is also relevant to the quick headline we gave and visually reinforces the narrative of our post. It indirectly showcases the valuable and unique items we find while outsourcing for the shop. There is also the extreme emotional appeal of these specific images as it’s capturing a moment of discovery we made. It showcases the anticipation and satisfaction of finding these items and creates a connection with our audience as we invite them to join us on our sourcing journeys. The close-up of the Nascar tee allows us to place a button under it so the consumer knows they will go back to our website if they click it. We know the consumer wants to get an in-close look at the tee shirt if they click on the blog post, so that’s what we are giving them.

The images were beneficial to the blog post because they show visual engagement. The image instantly grabs the viewer’s attention with its bright colours and high price tag, giving excitement and surprise to the blog post and encouraging the user to explore further. Visual engagement is critical for retaining users’ interest, especially with how much content is at the user’s fingertips today. Without the images we used, readers would be disinterested in what we are writing, and no visual stimulation would be used. The storytelling portion of the post would be missing as our text directly speaks to the images, and the images carry most of the elements that would keep a user on our blog post.

Assignment 4 Question 1 https://blog.fromtherackwindsor.com/assignment-4-question-1/ Tue, 02 Apr 2024 05:01:13 +0000 https://blog.fromtherackwindsor.com/?p=1399 1. As discussed in class, please provide three reasons why visuals are important to web content. Please ensure you go into detail for each item. (6 Marks)

Visuals are important to web content due to 65% of the population being visual learners

This means that most users, if not all, of the users coming to your website are looking for images or visual stimulation. This is either conscious or subconscious for the user. Visuals help summarize content you make into smaller chunks for the user; it’s more understandable than text or audio. Three reasons why visuals are essential to the web are one, visuals stick in users’/consumers’ long-term memory; two, visuals are transmitted into the user’s head faster than text, which helps when users have so much content at their fingertips; and third, Visuals trigger emotions more then the text would. These aren’t all the essential benefits, but these are the three main points we talked about in class.

According to Dr. Lynell Burmark, and supported by research findings, visuals can stick in our long-term memory. They compared text to images and found that verbal information tends to pass through short-term memory more quickly as long-term memory directly stores images. This means users retain images for a longer period, which can relate to brand requisition and sales later down the funnel. Jandhyala, D. (2021, May 12). Visual learning: 6 reasons Why Visuals are the most powerful aspect of eLearning. eLearning Industry. https://elearningindustry.com/visual-learning-6-reasons-visuals-powerful-aspect-elearning For instance, if I were to show you a picture of a t-shirt with my brand logo on it, you would keep that in your long-term memory for longer than if I was to explain what was on the t-shirt in a paragraph. Visuals can also help aid users with text. Instead of just using text or visuals, the best way to ensure the user stores the information you want them to for a long time is to combine images and text. In doing this, you add more context and meaning to the content. Using images within content in the future is extremely important as it not only retains to longer memory but also gets the user to remember key information that will get the user to act upon your content and advertisements.

The human brain processes visuals faster than text. The brain can register images in milliseconds, and visual information is transmitted to the brain 60,000 times faster than text.

This is why our brain loves pictures | International Forum of Visual Practitioners. (n.d.). https://ifvp.org/content/why-our-brain-loves-pictures

This indicates that visuals play a massive role in directing attention and more efficiently engaging users with our content. When we are using structured content, it’s important to plan out your information so you can remove text and add images instead; this will, in turn, capitalize on the brain’s ability to process visual information quicker and more efficiently. Forty percent of nerve fibres are also linked to the retina. This is one of the reasons that we process information faster through images and visual content. ImageThinkNet. (2023, November 14). Vision In The Brain: Is it True or False that vision rules the brain? ImageThink. https://www.imagethink.net/true-or-false-vision-rules-the-brain/

Using images and visual content, with or without text, will help users read our content faster overall. This will help with the F-pattern and reverse pyramid, as users will stop to take in the image instead of scrolling past it. It’s also a great way to direct users’ attention to an area we want them to see. This is an important reason why visual content is so important to the web.

Visuals not only help convey information and allow users to consume it faster but also help trigger an emotional response. Visual cues can evoke emotions and create a stronger connection with the audience; this is a vital tool that allows us to hook the audience or user into buying from us. When the user finds visually compelling content that resonates with them emotionally, it will lead to a more memorable experience for them. For example, if we created an image of us finding vintage Jnco jeans at a Goodwill, it would give our target audience excitement and hope that they might be able to find something like that, too. Emotions are also processed in the encoding of visual memory, which further emphasizes the link between visual and emotional responses. Using visual content to evoke emotion isn’t just for the positive, though. Using negative emotions in visuals can leave a strong emotional response and sometimes be better for advertisements than positive ones. Consumers tend to remember negative emotions more than positive ones. For example, would it stick in your head more if you gained $20 dollars or lost 20 dollars? The answer is always lost. Incorporating these emotional triggers through visual content adds another level of depth to our content and helps with trust and gaining a stronger connection with the audience.

Assignment 3 Question 4 https://blog.fromtherackwindsor.com/assignment-3-question-4/ Mon, 18 Mar 2024 20:19:57 +0000 https://blog.fromtherackwindsor.com/?p=1392 4. For question #2, what did you do differently from the original post? Please outline, explain and justify what you changed & why. Essentially, what did you learn from this new topic and what did you change and why. (8 Marks)

Regarding question #2, we made several changes from the original post to enhance its effectiveness with F-pattern and plain language writing. We also wanted to increase the KPI of retaining interest and reduce the bounce rate from the post. Here’s a Breakdown of what we changed and why we changed them.

Original post:

The original post contained detailed information presented in paragraph form and didn’t take into consideration plain language writing. It went in-depth and wasn’t easy to digest and understand. This could overwhelm readers and make it challenging to grasp key points quickly. Ultimately, the post made it hard for readers to retain the information.

Revised Post:

The revised post addressed this issue by restructuring the content to present critical information in bullet points, making it more reader-friendly. Bullet points help provide a clear overview of all the benefits we offer from shopping from the rack. This format allows readers to scan through the content quickly, enabling them to identify relevant information and retain interest in the content.

Original post:

Our original post didn’t have images and didn’t fully grasp the reader’s attention. Visuals play a massive role in capturing attention and maintaining engagement, but we didn’t fully recognize the importance of images when we created the post.

Revised Post:

In the revised post, we highlighted the importance of relevant visuals in retaining interest. We selected images strategically that complimented the content and evoked emotions related to thrifted fashion and community engagement. The revised version aims to maintain readers and lower bounce rates as it keeps them engaged. Visuals serve as powerful storytelling tools, captivating visitors’ attention and encouraging them to stay involved with From The Rack.

Original post:

Our original post lacked a distinct tone and personality; we wrote it for F-pattern and didn’t write it for plain language writing. The post felt impersonal and generic to the readers. It efficiently communicated the information about the From The Rack and our offerings. Still, it missed an opportunity to connect with the audience on a deeper, more personal level.

Revised Post:

In the revised post, the language is infused with personality to create a more engaging and relatable tone for our target audience. By incorporating plain language, we infused the text with playful expressions and relatable anecdotes and ensured we resonated with our audience more than the original post. An example of this was instead of stating, “Welcome to From The Rack,” we said, “Welcome to From The Rack, Your new favorite place to buy vintage clothes.” This is a more friendly and enthusiastic tone that sets a welcoming atmosphere and invites the reader to feel like valued member of our community.

Assignment 3 Question 3 https://blog.fromtherackwindsor.com/assignment-3-question-3/ Mon, 18 Mar 2024 20:15:31 +0000 https://blog.fromtherackwindsor.com/?p=1389 3. For question #2, please outline in detail how your new post addressed the three main objectives as discussed in class. Please outline in detail for each. (9 Marks)

Our new revised post starts with a bold headline that hooks the reader. It also explains the post by saying, “Your new favourite place to buy vintage clothes.” This concisely explains what the post will be about moving forward, drawing attention to our brand and what we offer. We also included visuals to complement the content on the page; this is following plain language writing. It also enhances the text and is used since visual content is 40 times more likely to be shared on social media than text-based content. Articles that contain images also get 94% more views than just text-based articles.

These images are strategically positioned throughout the post to break up the text and create visual interest, which helps entice visitors to continue reading. Another way we were able to capture attention was through our CTA button; this button says, “Start Shopping Now!”  which stands out at the end of the posts and prompts the readers to act and explore our website further. The use of bold text and a contrasting colour to the background ensures that the button is evident to the reader, encouraging engagement. We also made to speak in a more accessible, forgiving tone to the audience to make them pay more attention to the text; we didn’t want to bore them with droning text.

The post we created provides detailed information about the benefits of shopping at From The Rack, the free stickers we provide with every order, the free shipping of over 50 dollars, personalized playlists, and community engagement opportunities. By highlighting these benefits, we can keep the reader engaged and encourage them to explore further with a CTA button at the bottom of the post. We made sure to add bullet points and lists to follow the F-pattern and make it universally easier for the reader of a broad audience to understand where they need to focus their attention to. It also allows for the visitors to quickly grasp the main advantages of shopping at From The Rack. This format prevents information overload and maintains the reader’s interest. The visuals we chose helped to capture the reader’s attention, but they also helped the reader retain interest. They do this by complementing the text-based content to evoke emotions related to thrifted fashion and community engagement. Showcasing real people enjoying looking through our clothing and participating in community activities will resonate with the visitors and encourage them to stay engaged with the post and brand.

We prompted the visitor to click the “Start Shopping Now!” button. It is a clear prompt for visitors to act and explore the online store. After providing relevant information about the brand, placing the button at the end of the post encourages visitors to convert their interest into action. The post emphasizes incentives such as free stickers, free shipping, and personalized Spotify playlists; this enables the visitors to not only shop but also engage with the brand’s community and offerings in said community. By highlighting these incentives, the post prompts visitors to act and explore our website’s offerings. By inviting visitors to join our email list (The From The Rack community), we are fostering ongoing engagement beyond making a purchase. It also helps for future segmentation later down the line. This also positions the brand as more than just a store but also a community of like-minded individuals; the post encourages visitors to become involved and invested in our brand From The Rack.

Assignment 3 Question 1 https://blog.fromtherackwindsor.com/assignment-3/ Mon, 18 Mar 2024 19:44:30 +0000 https://blog.fromtherackwindsor.com/?p=1378 1. We spoke about Plain English writing in class. Please answer the following in detail:

Plain English can be broken down into three main objectives. These objectives are that your writing needs to be clear, concise, and correct. In class discussion, we talked about how plain English is important, it’s how we effectively communicate on the internet. Plain language must be clear so the message you are trying to convey is easily understandable to a wide audience. Plain language is emphasized by using simple, everyday language. An example of this would be, instead of convoluted descriptions, using straightforward terms like “people” instead of “photographers and graphic artists,” using more basic terms makes the content more accessible. With accessibility, plain English prioritizes the reader’s needs by ensuring that the content is easy to find and understand and use. The content needs to be organized so the readers can find what they are looking for without getting confused and frustrated. The reader is number one when it comes to plain language writing so understanding the audience and tailoring the message to their needs is a must. Knowing the literacy levels, language proficiency, and familiarity with the topic will help with directly writing to the target audience. For instance, using active verbs and positive messages ensures engagement and clarity. Overall, effective “Plain English Writing” ensures clarity and engagement with the audience. Make sure the writing is always tailored towards the audience and use language that resonates with them. As well as organizing the information so the reader can effortlessly navigate the content. The third objective would be to write for action, this is so the reader takes the necessary steps to drive purpose and effectiveness within our communication. Keeping the text concise and to the point will also respect the reader’s time and attention and will keep them from bouncing from your content overall. The last objective would be to design the content to be visually appealing and accessible; this will further enhance the communication experience. By adhering to these principles, you can create content that follows the plain English writing technique.

Plain English writing differentiates itself from other writing styles through its unique characteristics and approach to content communication. At the core, plain English writing is heavily based on clarity and simplicity; plain English is the effort to simplify complex language, technical terms, and convoluted sentence structure in favour of straightforward and easily digestible language. This is to try to make our message and goal as easily accessible as we can to a broad audience. It’s to explain a subject in a universal way that a person could follow without having a high level of expertise or familiarity with it. Plain English writing is deeply connected with the audience-centricity. As the creator of the content, we need to understand the audience’s background so that the content will suit a broad audience that might not have our complex knowledge. This doesn’t mean dumbing down the content, though. It just means the writing needs to resonate with the reader effectively and communicate the intended message we want to create. An aspect of plain English writing is the action-orientated approach. Through providing clear instructions and CTAs, plain writing encourages readers to take tangible steps, for example, having to fill out a voting card for an election; that is the broadest audience there is, and you need to create instructions that everyone will understand that being brand new voters and people who have been voting for their whole life. The way to do this is through images and actionable communication. This is what sets plain English apart from the other styles of writing that may lack clear directives or fail to engage readers as if it is too complicated to understand. Plain English values efficiency and accessibility. The whole point is to convey information as best as possible without going overboard and using unnecessary details. This makes it easier for readers to absorb critical information easier. Going back to the voter example, if the instructions were unclear, people would take longer to fill out ballots, and it would hold up everyone’s day. Plain English writing allows for things to run smoothly. Plain English is one of the most engaging approaches to written communication, it brings in a wide range of audiences and contexts.

Plain language writing for the web is critical because people are busy. There is so much content and information at readers’ fingertips that people spend less than 15 seconds deciding whether to engage with the content. This spells disaster if people need to think about what your content is trying to say. People will bounce from your site and invest their time with another one. With plain language writing for the web, your ROI will decrease, and you will lose money if you don’t use it. It is an instrumental writing style that shows results. It will improve your website’s conversion rates, lower your webpage bounce rates, and improve the time on the page. Plain English isn’t about dumbing the content down, though. It’s just about avoiding language that trips people up and will, in turn, dilute the message you are trying to get across. Writing using the inverted pyramid method will help you succeed in writing in plain language. This means making sure the most important details are the first thing the user sees; this helps with users skimming over your content and will still get your message across while allowing the user to digest the content accessible and quickly. Space on a webpage is limited. This means being clear and concise is vital on the web so you can pack a punch and deliver exciting content that a broad audience can consume. Short sentences and simple grammatical structures will accomplish this and be much easier to follow than winding sentences. After creating clarity in your writing, you can add your brand’s voice and personality to the content. Overall, plain language writing for the web is essential because it enhances comprehension, user experience, inclusivity, and credibility. By prioritizing clarity and simplicity in your online content, we can effectively communicate our message to a wide audience and create a positive user experience that will reduce bounce rates, increase time on the website and have higher conversion rates.

Assignment 2. Part B question 7 https://blog.fromtherackwindsor.com/assignment-2-part-b-question-7/ Sun, 03 Mar 2024 20:12:02 +0000 https://blog.fromtherackwindsor.com/?p=1342 You are to create a headline about the 2nd year digital classes in this program. The audience will be 1st year students. Please provide the headline and your reasoning behind it. In addition, please outline what information is missing in this question that you would need to create the headline. (4 Marks

This headline focuses on action-oriented language as it starts with “unlocking success”  and “master these three steps” this encourages first-years to take action and engage with the content as they want to be successful going into second year. This headline also gives specific information to the reader by clearly defining that these steps are tailored for second year adverting and marketing classes. With the first years following these steps that are in the article, they will have a better understanding of second year adverting and marketing digital classes.

Some of the information that is missing from the question that would be required to create a well written headline is what the digital classes are, they aren’t specific enough to write an article or a specific headline as you must be generic with the classes as they could mean any class that needs a computer. Another specific that is missing from the question is if these first-year students are in the advertising and marketing program, as the question doesn’t state that. It states they are first-year students; understanding the target market better would also be a plus, as we don’t know the student’s goals or interests. The difference between this question and question six is that we were given who our target audience was, which was graduating high school students. It’s easier to understand what they would think, as everyone has been in that spot. As for question seven, these first-year students could want to drop out or just want basic information on the second-year digital classes. It’s like two separate topics that aren’t connected, and it’s a very generic goal and not specific enough.

This was the final headline Chat was able to come up with by using my prompts. The reason I stuck with this headline was since it has everything you would want for a good headline it has, an emphasis on success for the high school graduates which will capture their attention and then lead into a call to action telling them to “enroll” into the program. There is also a USP in the headline (Unique Selling Position) that shows that 90% of graduates get employed in this field which is an extremely impressive. The headline is also clear and concise, based on the prompt information I gave on high school students and the advertising program. The overall tone of the headline is also aimed at high school students and gives the reader confidence by implying that success is within reach by applying to the program.

  3. 7 Reasons To Head To The 2024 Detroit Auto Show Before It’s Too Late! (call to action)

The reasoning behind creating this headline is to give the audience a numerical number to capture the reader’s attention right away; they can categorize it before reading the rest of the headline. As the number is so low, users will assume that the list will be higher quality and not a significant time commitment. The headline is also essential and right to the point because more than half of users respond more positively to articles that don’t use filler words (Safran, 2021.)

The promising payoff with pictures is also a heavy driver with this headline, as it promises the readers visual content alongside the text. This payoff entices visually oriented readers and helps with engagement. It’s promising the readers with a payoff.

The headline starts with an intriguing statement that creates a sense of immediacy and excitement for the reader. The implication of this statement is that the reader will gain access to breaking news in this case being the best car show winners. The reader will want to click the article to gain access to the information we are providing them. The headline is extremely clear in what the reader will get by clicking on it; it provides a direct and informative message that the reader can immediately understand. The exclamation mark at the end adds emphasis and energy to the end of the headline, conveys urgency to the reader, and amplifies the sense of excitement that is accumulating around the announcement.

The headline I created starts as a listicle format by starting with “7 reasons,” which is effective in attracting attention and organizing the content on the webpage as their will be seven points touched upon. Listicle format is popular due to the readability and ability to cover the points adequately. The call to action within the headline “Head to the 2024 Detroit Auto Show Before It’s Too Late!” urges readers to attend the event. This will motivate the reader to click the headline to determine where and when the event occurs. This call to action, it also promotes FOMO as the reader has a fear of missing out on the event. As per class discussion we spoke about how a loss is more substantial than a gain so by using this FOMO technique more readers will want to click on the headline.
